Find a subtraction strategy that makes sense.

The Subtraction Strategy Toolkit helps learners understand subtraction through visual models, manageable steps, and flexible approaches. With Dareold the Turtle and Chester the Chameleon, learners explore different ways to solve problems and discover strategies that help.

Explore six approaches:

  • Take Away: Cross out part of a group and count what remains.
  • Number Lines: Jump backward to find the answer.
  • Counting Up: Count from the smaller number to the larger number to find the difference.
  • Break Apart Numbers: Split the amount being subtracted into smaller parts and subtract in steps.
  • Friendly Numbers: Change the starting number to a nearby easier number, then adjust.
  • Compensation: Subtract a nearby easier amount, then add back what was taken away extra.

Each strategy includes an explanation, a worked example, guided practice, independent practice, and a create-your-own page. Strategy reflection pages encourage learners to consider which approaches help.

Worked solutions that help teach

Step-by-step answer keys follow each practice section. Completed diagrams and calculations help learners compare their work, identify where a mistake may have happened, and try again with support. Different approaches can still lead to the same correct answer. Use at home, in the classroom, or during individual support. Explore one strategy at a time, model examples together, and revisit helpful approaches at the learner’s pace.
