The Regulation-First Framework

A guide to the approach behind K&K Studios’ PDA resources: reduce pressure, respect autonomy, and make room for connection and participation.

Four-rung ladder showing the PDA support approach from bottom to top: Lower Pressure, Shrink the Demand, Regulate Together, and Expand Capacity.

When Pressure Rises, Start Lower

When everyday expectations feel overwhelming, more reminders, explanations, or urgency can add to the load.

Start by considering what feels difficult, what pressure can be reduced, and what support is welcome. Sometimes that means fewer words, more time, a smaller step, or permission to pause.

The Regulation-First approach brings these considerations together to help adults respond with flexibility and understanding. Support can change with the person, the situation, and their available energy.

A Flexible Guide to Support

These five considerations guide the approach. Move between them as needed, allowing time and space for what feels manageable.

Regulate First

Make room to pause. Offer time, space, quiet, or connection according to what the person finds helpful.

Reduce Invisible Demands

Notice pressure from reminders, questions, time limits, sensory demands, and unspoken expectations. Consider what can be simplified, postponed, or removed.

Shift Language

Use fewer words, allow processing time, and offer genuine choices. Leave room for the person to decline, suggest another way, or ask for support.

Collaborate

When the person is ready, explore what feels difficult and what might help. Agree on a manageable next step together.

Repair & Re-Enter

Reconnect after difficult moments without rushing a discussion. When everyone is ready, consider what support could make returning easier.

From Framework to Practice

Putting this approach into practice can begin with one small change: adjusting a phrase, simplifying a routine, or making space to pause.
