Discover Your Math Brain Settings

Math Brain: Player Setup • Grades 6-9

What helps one student think may make math harder for another.

Math Brain: Player Setup gives older learners a way to share what works for them, what depends on the situation, and what adds extra effort.

Students sort cards into four categories: Works for Me, It Depends, Adds Load, and Not Sure Yet. Then they record what they notice in a short Player Profile.

There are no correct settings. The goal is to understand the learner’s experience and find a useful next step.

A student reflection activity—not a dyscalculia screener or diagnostic assessment.

Let the Student Choose Their Settings

Print the board, cut apart the cards, and invite your learner to sort a few.

A worked example might help with an unfamiliar task but feel unnecessary with something familiar. Working with another person might help one day and add effort another day.

“It depends” and “not sure yet” belong in the conversation. Explore one response together and choose one adjustment to try.

Turn Their Settings Into a Support Plan

Player Setup starts the conversation. Math Brain Basics for Grades 6–9 helps you explore what comes next.

Explore where math gets stuck, what contributes to overload, and how math shows up in everyday life. Student reflection tools help you recognize progress beyond correct answers and build an individualized support plan.
