Math Brain Quick Check • Grades 2-5
What Helps Your Child's Math Brain?
An incorrect answer doesn’t tell you everything about why math is difficult.
Feed Barry’s Math Brain gives learners a playful way to share what helps—and what makes math harder. They sort cards into Barry’s YUM and BLECH piles based on their own experience. There are no predetermined correct answers.
Includes printable sorting mats, student cards, and adult guidance for noticing patterns and choosing a practical next step.
A reflection activity—not a dyscalculia screener or diagnostic assessment.
Let Their Choices Start the Conversation
Does seeing an example help? Does working quickly make things harder? Is working with someone useful—or distracting?
Read the cards together and let your learner decide. “Sometimes,” “it depends,” and “I don’t know” are useful responses, too.
Choose a few cards, notice a pattern, and try one adjustment. You don’t need to change everything at once.
Turn a First Conversation Into More Individual Support
The Quick Check opens the conversation. Math Brain Basics gives you more ways to explore it.
The Grades 2–5 collection helps students describe how they learn, recognize strengths, explore overload, and communicate when they understand the math but struggle to show it.
Use what you discover together to choose supports that fit the learner.
