When staying focused feels hard
Your child starts the task, but keeping their attention there is another challenge. They may lose their place, get pulled toward something else, or need help returning after an interruption.
Explore practical tools for noticing what interrupts focus, trying a different approach, and finding a manageable way back.
What might be getting in the way?
When attention slips, it helps to look at the task, the surroundings, and what the learner needs.
-
Too much is competing for attention.
Sounds, movement, nearby materials, or thoughts about something else can pull attention away from the task.
-
There's too much too keep track of.
Holding directions in mind while working through several steps can make it difficult to remember where to go next.
-
The way of working needs adjusting.
A learner may need movement, a shorter stretch of work, a clearer prompt, or another way to approach the task.
Find what helps this learner
Start with one strategy and explore it together. Would clearing some space help? Reading aloud? Adding movement or making the next step easier to see?
Keep useful supports within reach and notice what happens. Learners can build a small collection of strategies that fit how they work—and change their choices when their needs change.
Returning to a task, recognizing a distraction, or asking for support are all moments worth noticing.
